Full Description:
Cleaning out your closets, basement, attic or garage yet you don't want to throw things away because somebody might be able to use it? Or maybe you just had a yard Sale and still have lots leftover. Have you been running your air conditioner day and night and have a sky-high electric bill? Might you be wasting water with a leak? Don't know what to do with those old tires? Whatever the case may be, you can help our community by following the 3R's - Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. I'm a confirmed "pack rat" and have been slowly trying to reduce the clutter I've created over the years. I've been doing some reading and came across some useful websites and thought I'd share them with my neighbors. If we all followed just one or two of the many suggestions, we could really help our environment. Besides, you'll just feel good about it.
To learn where to recycle certain items in your community, just visit Earth 911 and plug in your zip code. You'll be provided with a list of recycling resources in your community. In addition, this site features a kids section, tips on energy conservation and other links.
To learn of strategies on how to prevent waste visit NYC Waste Le$$
Another NY based waste prevention and recycling advocacy group can be found at Recycle This
But my best discovery has been a group called Freecycle. It's a group with local chapters all across the country where you can list any items you'd like to give away for free. Chances are somebody wants it. You arrange the details of the exchange. There's a NYC chapter and a brand new Queens chapter. You can also post a message for an item you are seeking. All items must be free. Check them out atFreecycle
I just listed some items I'm looking to get rid of, I fixed a leak in my toilet and I've got lots of ideas on how to reduce waste (hopefully, I'll start following them). Now go do your part.
